Research shows that what you get paid is directly correlated to your wage expectation; that is, what you expect to get paid. The challenge to overcome is that we often assume we are not worth more, fear retaliation, are afraid of losing the offer, or you just don’t know any different.
First thing to know is that you don’t have to accept the first offer that is proposed, and that does not mean that the offer will be withdrawn. The premise of negotiating your employment offer is that your employer is most likely going to offer you the lowest level within the a pay band, giving them an opportunity to gradually raise your salary/benefits the longer you stay with the organization.
So how do you negotiate your salary?
I want you to go into the negotiation process with 3 numbers in mind.
- Your anchor
- Due diligence number
- The amount that you will be happy with.

Understand that an offer is exactly that, AN OFFER; you get to decide if it works for you or not. I encourage you to aim for higher within reason.
